looks like progress

help!
just kidding we are ok!

cheers to day #1 demo of scary room! so if you don't know about our house its a small, beautiful, cozy, warm, eerrrrr, spazzy, sometimes really annoying 1940 cottage, we bought a couple years ago. it had just a couple faults to say the least, most of which are livable or moderately easy to fix.
this is not that part. we have a room which was poorly thought out and shabbily drywalled. not one but 3, yes three times. the trim is flush with the wall, the breaker boxe(s) are really deep, (yeah that is 2 breaker boxes in one room. we actually have 3! that is what happens to houses made into apts.) and lets be honest... the ceiling looks as if it will fall any minute.wait. there is more... and there is a washer and dryer in a "bedroom" that dosent have a door. my daughter is 2 and still sleeps in our bedroom .. because her room looks like the picture above!
this project was started one month into moving in, with a friend and a bottle of wine at 8:30 pm one wall came down..

caroline and i. 2006

3 1/2 years and one pregnancy later....

today started the big... i am so over this, its now or never! we need to live in our whole house project.
i am going at this knowing pretty much nothing as to how to do any of it. i have made myself prepared for the worst as i have learned to do with my house i love so much. well today went as planned! so you see the slats in the wall above? oops! right off i was mistaken. there wasn't 3 layers of drywall! there was 2 and this nice piece of work we call: plaster. complete with all with the horse hair intact! i thought i got rid off all the ugly green when we moved in! apparently..wrong again.

the top layer came off beautifully as you can see in the pic above. the second layer not so much. pounding away at the plaster i was determined to get all the way to the bottom of this mess but i stopped and realized, maybe i should actually think about something before i did it. think i did and have decided so far i will keep the plaster for a barrier from all the scary things behind it. i may however, change my mind depending on what the ceiling looks like when i tear that down. so there it is!
thanks maggie for keeping the kid, home depot for your very large carts, caroline for all the advice, mom and dad for the perfect gift every 2 year old dreams of: sheetrock, brian for your wonderful tools, and most of all... jared for putting up with my plethora of never ending projects. (i think jared still secretly wishes he bought a house in the burbs built in 1998.)
so speaking of projects! next topic!!! my paper bag foor. weird i know. i searched and searched for a temporary floor for the laundry and sias room we could afford. i came up with this thanks to google!
  • paper bags or kraft paper
  • polyurethane
  • crafty hands
  • $80

TA DA!

not quite dry or finished laundry floor but you get the picture.

my temporary solution i fell in love with and ended up getting a little carried away.... i also redid sia's playroom table; formally known as our kitchen table; formerly known as jared college table; formerly known as his moms something or another table.

  • drag your dining room table out to the front yard
  • cut off the legs
  • unscrew drop leaves
  • paint
  • get far to crafty than you should
  • add some castors
  • hope you have a backup dining table somewhere

so, i finally have a good answer to everyones question... "hows the project going? have you even started?"

YES!
